Royal Anglian Regiment Freedom of Entry March

  • 2 July 2017 10-11am

The Freedom of Entry is an honour which has been bestowed by the Council granting the regiment the privilege to march into the area ‘with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed’, in recognition of its service as the County’s official regiment, and also in acknowledgement of the gallantry and dedication demonstrated by all of its service men and women.

The event will reflect the regiment’s historic march through the Borough in 1916 during the First World War. Accompanied by a marching band, the regiment will begin the march from the Spotlight Theatre, along the High Street to the War Memorial in Hoddesdon before making its way back.

The Mayor of Broxbourne will be present on the day to take a salute and inspect the regiment, followed by an official presentation by local dignitaries.

The granting of the Freedom of Entry tradition is part of the history of local government, and is an example of the power and influence boroughs had in the past. During the middle ages troops were not allowed to march though a borough without permission from the Council and thus the Freedom of Entry would normally be granted to local troops once mutual confidence and friendship had been established, and when the citizens were satisfied that the troops would protect their best interests.

There will be a number of road closures, parking restrictions and diversions in place to facilitate the event, and the Council will make every reasonable effort to reopen the route as soon as possible to minimise inconvenience to local residents. Details can be found on the Council’s website at www.broxbourne.gov.uk/FreedomOfEntry.
