Patron? Collaborator? Employer? Voyeur? Lover?

William Shakespeare is on trial. Questioned about his relationship with the 3rd Earl of Southampton. What exactly did happen between them?

The evidence: Tender poems. Financial dependency. Attempted revolution. A charge of treason.

A compelling new drama set in the powder keg of sex, politics and power in Elizabethan England.

This world premiere is written by award-winning playwright Nick Dear (Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch, The National Theatre; The Art of Success, Royal Shakespeare Company, Olivier Nomination) and directed by Nuffield’s Director, Samuel Hodges, following his critically-acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie in 2015.

Dramatic design by Alex Lowde (Linda, Royal Court [Costume Design], Tis Pity She’s A Whore, Shakespeare Globe) transforms the auditorium into an intimate setting that places the audience on the stage at the heart of the performance.

The Complete Deaths

The Complete Deaths

  • 11 — 15 October 2016

There are 74 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare - 75 if you count the black ill-favoured fly killed in Titus Andronicus. From the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to the death fall of Prince Arthur in King John; from the carnage at the end of Hamlet to snakes in a basket in Antony & Cleopatra. And then there’s the pie that Titus serves his guests.

Spymonkey will perform them all - sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically, always hysterically. The four ‘seriously, outrageously, cleverly funny clowns' (Time Magazine) will scale the peaks of sublime poetry, and plumb the depths of darkest depravity. It may even be the death of them.

Adapted and directed by Tim Crouch (I, Malvolio, An Oak Tree, Adler & Gibb), The Complete Deaths will be a solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Emperor's New Clothes

The Emperor's New Clothes

  • 28 October 2016 1-2pm, 4-5pm
  • 29 October 2016 11am-12pm, 2-3pm

Following sell out performances of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Stuff and Nonsense return to Nuffield with their latest production.

Inspired by The Muppets, Danny Kaye and good old family movies, this romp through a classic, eccentric tale tells the story of an Emperor who loves clothes more than anything. But there is a
problem…Despite a wardrobe the size of Paris he's run out of outfits and it is his birthday tomorrow! He hasn't got a stitch to wear!

When two 'designers' come to town with a promise to create him an outfit that's "never been seen before", our eccentric Emperor doesn't quite realise the spectacle he is about to make.
Populated with puppets, music and song, this inventive and energetic production is told in true Stuff and Nonsense style; with unending energy, great storytelling and, as always, a show for all
the family.

Institute

Institute

  • 2 — 5 November 2016

Welcome to Gecko’s Institute, where forgotten stories and re-cycled memories pour out of filing cabinets and endless corridors. Four gripping journeys collide in an extraordinary world of breathtaking movement and exquisite storytelling.

Martin longs for one more breath with Margaret. Daniel climbs higher and higher over a towering world but will he fulfil his ambition? Stuck in this beguiling maze of officialdom they lurch from one outrageous task to another. But who is giving the orders?

We have plunged into what it means to care. We have spoken to our elders, colleagues and friends, witnessed those on the edges of society, and looked at the world around us. For two years we have honed and crafted Institute - an intimate dissection of the way we nurture and care for ourselves and each other.

“Institute is a piece of physical and visual theatre capable of swallowing you whole”

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox

  • 22 November 2016 — 8 January 2017

Mr. Fox is smart, clever and rather fantastic. Boggis, Bunce and Bean, three greedy, smelly, horrid farmers hate the cunning Mr. Fox. He outwits them at every turn stealing their livestock, taking food from under their noses, and making fools of them all.

But Mr. Fox and his family don't realise how determined the farmers are to get revenge …. They are digging, digging down deep. Can Mr. Fox hatch a plan to save his family and friends? Can they outrun the diggers and outsmart the farmers, and can rabbit shut up long enough not to give the game away?

Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is family fun at its very finest. A funny, fast, warm and slightly madcap story of greed, pride and the power of friendship.
