The Atkinson

The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful new home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings, to create a really welcoming multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel.

Getting there

By Road

With a variety of road networks leading into Southport taking in some stunning views, it is easy to travel to Southport by car:

From the South, take the M6 to exit 26; the M58 will take you to Ormskirk and then take the A570 to Southport.

From the North, follow the A59 from Preston (exit 31 from the M6) and then follow the signs to Southport.

Fine Art Collection

The Atkinson has an outstanding collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings and watercolours dating from the 17th century to the present day.
Exhibitions

We will be undertaking a series of thematic exhibitions throughout the year with objects drawn mainly from The Atkinson’s permanent collection, enhanced with loans from other regional museums and from the Arts Council’s collection of contemporary art. Content will be designed to cover the widest range of visitor taste from traditional oil paintings to avant-garde installations and digital media.
History Collection

Our history collections include archaeology, ethnography, coins and medals, toys, furniture, Triassic fossil footprints, maritime history and local history.
The Goodison Collection of Egyptology

This collection is considered to be of national importance and contains around 1,000 objects including a sarcophagus lid, bronze figures, jewellery, clothing and scarabs.
Decorative Arts

Our decorative art collection features large collections of Goss and Liverpool Porcelain, as well as Minton, Wedgwood, Chinese porcelain and contemporary craft.
