A listed Georgian building, The Minories is of local importance within the historic town of Colchester. The Friends of the Minories and Victor Batte-Lay Trust have ensured the building be used to the benefit of the local arts community. This continues with Colchester School of Art providing contemporary art and design in one of Colchester’s most distinctive buildings. As well as studios for the MA students, the site also houses a public gallery and café surrounded by a walled garden. The Minories is next door to firstsite, Colchester’s new contemporary art space, in the centre of the town’s cultural quarter.

GROUNDBOUND : Desmond Brett
A group of artworks has settled in our garden......They are clouds. Clouds made from ideas of clouds. Or sculptures of drawings of clouds. Cloud forms. Puffs, fluffs and poofs. Thick shapes of the cumulo-form or the inevitable, distant puff of smoke at the bottom of the canyon after Wile E. Coyote has realised he has run beyond the cliff edge. They are heavy duty objects made from solid materials. They loll, lean or stand rooted to the floor, anchored to Terra firma. Anti-clouds.

PATTERN AND BELIEF : Keith Albarn
This exhibition presents findings from over forty years of Keith Albarn’s research into number systems and the patterns that can develop from them.
Using a simple number game as a starting point and combining it with an exploration of patterning and belief systems across the world, a number of new patterns with endless possibilities have been developed that connect across various dimensions.
These will be displayed through a patterned environment, prints, moving images, sculptural forms, artist’s games and sound-works. A library and collection of material that demonstrates how we pattern in order to understand and the connection between our patterning systems and those found in nature will further explain and uncover this area of research.
