Virginia Ray: Land Has Memory

  • 24 January — 14 March 2015 *on now

Virginia's family have lived and worked for generations in the landscape of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire and it is this landscape that is the focus of her work. In this Area of Outstanding Beauty, Virginia sees not only rolling hills and vegetation but also a layering of time. To her, this landscape has memory and it is the fluidity and cycle of life on the land that is her interest. In particular, she is interested in the lead mines, the quarries and the building of the reservoirs in the Dale. Incorporating cement and old photographs in her work, Virginia seeks to highlight the cultural and human histories of this landscape.

As Tacita Dean states, 'Land is space in which the process of remembrance continues to activate the past.'

Virginia Ray has an MA in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Virginia's work is shown with the renown ceramic artist Akiko Hirai.

Chris Taylor: Maker in Focus

  • 24 January — 14 March 2015 *on now

An exhibition of work by ceramicist Chris Taylor who decorates his conventional shape pots in exciting and unexpected layers of colour and pattern.

Whilst completing his Master degree at the Royal College of Art, Chris undertook an artist residency in China. This period allowed him to explore underglaze printing and the busy streets full of advertising posters and graffiti inspired him to 'find a new way to decorate'. The results of this can be seen in the overlapping use of floral patterns, vibrant glazes and muted washes.
