National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales

The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales is home to a comprehensive and unequalled collection of films, television programmes, videos, sound recordings and music relating to Wales and the Welsh.

The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales is responsible for safeguarding and celebrating Wales' rich audio-visual heritage. We collect, catalogue, preserve and provide public access to the material in our care.

Opening hours

The Archive Office is open to the public:
Monday-Friday, 10.00 - 17.00

Closed: Saturdays and Sundays

The collection has a wide range of content. It encompasses every aspect of the culture and life of Wales and the Welsh as it has been chronicled by the audio-visual media, in sound, video and film recordings, and to a certain extent, the latest digital media.

The collection comprises radio and television broadcasts, sound recordings and amateur films, cassettes and CDs, commercial films and videos on every subject under the sun - from sport to war, from news to history programmes, from art to the coal and slate industries, from politics to soap operas, from pop music to Pobol y Cwm, from Country and Western to Cwm Hyfryd, from oral history to the latest music trend.

There are also numerous examples of material which extend far beyond the boundaries of Wales, and which help to place the rest of the collections in a wider context.

The Archive in essence is a partnership - a dynamic partnership between a public organisation and individuals who deposit or present material to our care, and between the collections and their users.

If you have film, video or sound material that may be of relevance to NSSAW, or if you have information about filming or recording activity in your area or field of interest, the Archive would be pleased to hear from you. Every deposit or gift is received according to a purpose-made contract, and does not infringe in any way on rights in the material.

If you would like to present an item to the Archive's care, contact Elen Jones - 01970 632533 /
