An 18th century landscape 'forest' garden once home to the Bowes-Lyons family. Now, owned and managed by the National Trust, Gibside is a magnificent 600 acre estate for you to venture, exploring our woodlands, riverside and parkland to discover some of our rare and beautiful wildlife. Learn our history as you wander around the estate visiting our historic Palladian chapel, Column to Liberty, productive Walled Garden and majestic ruins of the Hall and Green House.

Getting there

By Road: Approx. 2 miles south of MetroCentre (A1) along the A694, on the outskirts of Gateshead. Sign posted along the route.

By Train & public transport: Nearest train station at MetroCentre plus public transport links from MetroCentre and Newcastle city centre.

By cycle: within 500m of the C2C (coast 2 coast) route, as it passes through Rowlands Gill, near Gateshead

EXHIBITION: Gibside Walled Garden Reimagined: Seeds of an Idea

This exhibition records a collaborative educational project between Gibside and Interior Architecture students at Northumbria University. Presenting student design proposals for the re-envisaging of areas within the Gibside Walled Garden.

Artist in Residence: Gilbert Ward

Renowned sculptor Gilbert Ward will be on-site carving designs inspired by nature on new seating for the Walled Garden. Come and watch him work and find out more. Normal admission charges apply.

This cross-curricular visit aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 students involves recognising Christian symbols and their meanings, and exploring shapes and materials in the building.
