Heritage Open Days: Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal

  • 12 September 2015

Discover the breathtaking designed landscape of the Aislabies
now a unique World Heritage Site with over 800 years of history, including the ruins of the once wealthy and powerful Fountains Abbey.

Leave yourself plenty of time to explore the 800 acres of medieval deer parkland, formal Georgian water gardens, Victorian high gothic church, Jacobean manor house, and monastic grounds
including the only surviving Cistercian corn mill.

Pick up our lost places trail to discover more about parts of the abbey and water garden that have disappeared over time and pop into Swanley Grange to create your own invisible art.

Seek out the follies in the water garden. These whimsical buildings will be transformed from their original use by some of the country's most inventive artists and designers. Great secrets lie within, inspired by the history of the garden and the opulence of the eighteenth century. We guarantee that you'll be astonished.

Join a specialist tour to find out more about the powerhouse behind the abbey. More than prayer was needed to sustain a monastic community
the monks used cutting edge 12th century technology. Meet at Porter's Lodge at 2pm.

There's also an abbey and water garden tour at 1.30pm, and guided tours of the abbey at 11.30am and 2.30pm. Meet at the Porter's Lodge.
