The Local Studies Library collects and preserves printed material relating to Sheffield and the surrounding area and makes it available for study and research. The collection of over 30,000 volumes includes books, pamphlets, journals and reports on all aspects of the city's history and development and the lives of its people.

Extensive collections of printed and other items relecting the history of Sheffield and the surrounding area from the 17th century onwards. The main collections are: - Newspapers from 1787; Sheffield street and trade directories from 1774; telephone directories from 1941; Census returns and electoral registers from 1841; Ordnance Survey Maps; more than 60,000 illustrations; sound recordings, film and video.
