Bernard Walke Centenary Exhibition
The exhibition will document the key aspects of the ministry of St Hilary's memorable vicar, Bernard Walke, who arrived in 1913 - one hundred years ago - and was incumbent until 1936. He was an extreme High Churchman who loved beauty and colour in worship and valued the arts highly. His wife Annie was an artist of the Newlyn School and Bernard commissioned many of their artist friends to contribute paintings and sculptures for the church. These still adorn the church today. The special exhibition will showcase other facets of Bernard's ministry, notably his parish plays, one of which - Bethlehem - was the first outside broadcast aired from the church by the fledgling BBC in 1924. Scripts and recordings still exist here. Also documented will be his oversight of a Home in the parish for needy children from London and his stance as a pacifist in 1914-1918. His time here was marred by controversy and this will be reflected too, but his legacy has been powerful and his ministry was much appreciated by many of his people. Come and learn about this remarkable man and experience the exceptional beauty and peace of St Hilary church.,
