The Egypt Exploration Society

The EES has been working in Egypt since 1882. Our aim is to make all aspects of the culture of ancient and historic Egypt (to 1900 AD) better known to the public.

Our fieldwork and research is undertaken in Egypt itself and the results of this work are made available through our website (ees.ac.uk), our publications, and through events held in London and Cairo.

The Society is a registered UK charity and relies on subscriptions and donations to fund its work. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in ancient Egypt.

Excavating Egypt at The Egypt Exploration Society, London

  • 12 — 26 July 2015

Ever wondered what it takes to be an archaeologist? Wanted to dig in Egypt? Or discover new treasures of your own? Well now you can!

Meet the teams that uncovered hidden secrets, find out where they lived, how they excavated and what they discovered. With over a century of experience, The Egypt Exploration Society holds one of the largest and most complete archaeological archives in the country, and for two weeks we're opening our doors to you. So, come and explore for yourself...

Discover the sites revealed by Petrie, retrace the texts unearthed by Naville, uncover the city mapped by Pendlebury, the temple recorded by Calverley or the tombs explored by Emery.

This is your chance to experience what life on an EES excavation was like, meet the teams that worked in the field, learn about the techniques they used and the artefacts they discovered.

Be guided by our founder, Miss Amelia Edwards, in a unique opportunity to join us in exploring our archive at our office in Doughty Mews, London from 12th - 26th July 2015.
Help us to celebrate the nationwide Festival of Archaeology with a range of events, from learning hieroglyphs, to reproducing Howard Carter's watercolours.
