Gayle Mill is a restored 19th century state-of-the-art sawmill, complete with Victorian machinery driven by water-powered turbines.

Opening hours

We welcome visitors during our open season to explore the Mill under the guidance of our Volunteer Tour Guides.

Standard Tours (approximately 1 hour)
22nd April – 2nd July Tuesdays – Saturdays 11am and 2pm
5th July – 1st October Tuesdays – Saturdays 11am, 12.30am, 2.00pm and 3.30pm

Demonstration Tours (approximately 2 hours)
You can also see the Mill come to life during a Demonstration Tour, when Guides will demonstrate using the Victorian Machinery.
1st Sunday of the Month – All Year 11am and 2.30pm

Parking at the Mill

Three car parking spaces for blue badge holders may be reserved. All other visitors should use local car parks. Cyclists may lock their bikes to special securing rings near the mill.

Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, approximately 20 minutes walking time to the mill. See “On Foot” details below
Gayle Lane (10 minutes walking time to the mill)

On Foot

From the centre of Hawes, take a footpath south out of Hawes past St Margaret's Church to join the Pennine Way, or by the side of the public conveniences just past Hawes Market Hall. On reaching Gayle Lane, turn left and walk a few hundred yards to the top of the lane.

Follow the sharp left hand bend, over the bridge, and then turn left down the Mill Lane alongside the water race to Gayle Mill's entrance.

From Wensleydale Creamery, turn left and walk to the top of the lane and then follow the instructions above from the bridge.

Additional info

Access

There is level wheelchair access to the ground floor (reception and workshop). There are stairs to the lower-ground floor and first floor. As Gayle Mill is a grade II* listed building, there is no lift between the three floors.

Audio-visual system

For visitors with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users, there is a video of "inaccessible" parts of the tour.

Refreshments

Self service drinks are available on the first floor.

WC

There is one unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet for the use of all visitors.

An Introduction to Blacksmithing Course

21 July 2013

Working under Adrian Wood’s expert tuition you learn the basic skills of a blacksmith. You will make three items a key ring, decorative hook, and something more complicated which are yours to take home with you. Throughout the day you will learn the skills required to flatten, point, twist and finish the metal. This course includes refreshments, a heavenly Herriots Kitchen lunch, all materials and tuition.

The Mill

An Introduction to Stone Slate Roofing

17 August 2013

This training will take place with practical, hands on demonstrations and tasks working on a wooden frame at ground level. You will learn the principles of the method with your feet safely on the ground. The tutors will provide advice and guidance on how to use your new knowledge safely when working at height if you should undertake any work of this type after the course. This course includes refreshments, a heavenly Herriots Kitchen lunch, all materials and tuition.

Print a cotton bag

Working with textile artist Stella Adams-Schofield, print and decorate a cotton bag. Gayle Mill was built on the success of the textile industry in Great Britain, and has reputation today for green energy supply dating back to 1879 when the first turbine was installed to power belt driven machinery at the Mill. Making it the ideal venue for is quirky workshop. This course includes refreshments, a heavenly Herriots Kitchen lunch, all materials and tuition.

Learn to use Gayle Mill’s historic water powered Victorian woodworking machines to create your own wood products (normally a rolling pin, boot jack and a milking stool) to take home with you.

During the course you will get the chance to use our 1879 machinery including a saw bench, a planer-thicknesser, a band-saw and two lathes; all belt driven by our Williamson turbine. As well as using hand tools for finishing.
