Scotland's Oldest Free Lending Library, established by David, 3rd Lord Madertie and located in a tranquil woodland setting close by the River Earn in Perthshire. The Library is run today by the Mortification of the Library, a trust set up on the death of the founder, and although it ceased to lend books in 1968, opens its doors and books to visitors from across the world each year.

Opening hours

The Library and the Chapel are open daily (except Monday and Tuesday) from 10.00 am to 12.45 pm and 2.00 pm to 4.45 pm. Sunday opening 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm. Groups are welcome at any time by prior arrangement.

From November 1st until the end of February the Library will only be open by appointment for parties or groups.

Crime and Punishment

Crime & Punishment reveals some of the most grisly tales from history in the Library’s books. Everyone loves a whodunit, but are you brave enough to explore crime writing 17th century style? The exhibition features famous and infamous trials such as that of Mary Queen of Scots, the Stewart Trial - inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped, and true stories of trials for witchcraft and piracy. Read about the Auld Lawes of the Scotland for Murther, Blasphemie and Treason – gathered out of ‘authentick bukes’.
