Saints and Sinners

  • 23 November 2013 — 26 October 2014 *on now

An exhibition exploring virtue and vice as depicted in the John Benjamin Smith Collection, gifted to Stockport in 1860.

Iconic religious scenes, stories of martyrdom and vistas of classical ruins provide an interesting backdrop to the story of the man behind the collection. Smith was an MP for Stockport for over 20 years and one of the founding fathers of Stockport’s Museums.

He collected these paintings during his grand tour of Italy in the first half of the 19th century.
