RAF HOLMPTON started life in the 1950's as an Early Warning Radar Station and by the 1970's it had gone on to become a major hub in the UK's Air Defences. In the 1980s it was extensively refurbished and became the National War HQ for RAF Support Command. In the 1990's it underwent a major rebuild to become an Experimental Electronic Warfare Operations Centre. In 2004 it became home to a new Public Exhibiton set in the 35,000sq ft command bunker nearly 100ft beneath the Yorkshire countryside, which is still in use today.
For Visitors: Our Award Winning Guided fully tours, along with shows and demonstrations, provide an insight into the Cold War World of the RAF & the part RAF HOLMPTON played in our Defence as the largest RAF installation in the East Riding of Yorkshire. (All our tours are updated every year).
Still a part of the RAF & the Defence Estate the site is now managed by the ROYAL AIR FORCE HOLMPTON PRESERVATION SOCIETY - The completion of the restoration project is now scheduled for the 2011 season, about 2 years ahead of schedule. Full details on our website at: www.rafholmpton.com
