I, Amir by Nisha Bhakoo

  • 24 November — 5 December 2015

Poet/Artist Nisha Bhakoo’s short film I, Amir explores the Freudian concept of the uncanny. It focuses on the uncanny implications of the doppelgänger, new technology and poetry, as well as exploring repression, creativity, and the performative nature of gender identity. Nisha Bhakoo experiments with rhythm and language in her poetry to create moods and atmospheres that are often difficult to articulate. Her poem Feathers plays a central role in creating an uncanny atmosphere in I, Amir.

The line between fantasy and reality is disturbed by the concept of the uncanny. It estranges every day objects and routines from their usual contexts to make them strangely unfamiliar. The fear of having a double is also bound up in the uncanny, as well as feelings of uncertainty regarding who one is.

I, Amir was supported by B3 Media. Nisha Bhakoo worked with BAFTA nominated Director of Photography Nick Dance, and the actor Valmike Rampersad.
