Jane Austen's House Museum in the village of Chawton in Hampshire is where Jane spent the last eight years of her life. It is of international importance as the place where she did the majority of her mature writing, but at the same time retains the charm of a village home. A 17th century house, it tells the story of Jane Austen and her family. The garden contains many varieties of plants and herbs common in the late 18th century and is still a peaceful spot.
Venue Type:
Museum, Historic house or home, Garden, parklands or rural site
Additional info
There are refreshment facilities close by in the village.
Visitors with disabilities: The ground floor, the garden and toilets are all accessible to wheelchairs.
The museum houses an attractive collection of items connected with Jane and her family including the table that she used to write her novels. There is some of her jewellery, and examples of her needlework skill. In the drawing room is a fine Hepplewhite bureau-bookcase and chairs that belonged to Jane's father and came from the rectory at Steventon. The bookcase contains some first editions of Jane's novels.
In the Old Bakehouse you will be able to see Jane's donkey carriage that she used when she was ill and too weak to travel far on foot. It has recently been refurbished and is used on special occasions.

Looking inside Jane Austen’s wardrobe
Using letters and novels Alison Carter explores what Jane Austen wore, where and when she bought and made her clothes, and what fabrics and colours she liked. With particular reference to the years 1809–1817 when Jane lived in Chawton, Alison will also link Jane’s own clothes to those described in Pride and Prejudice and the subtle differences that exist as the novel was first drafted in the late 1700s.
Alison warns that ‘I always talk about the underwear, too…’
Illustrated with images from fashion plates, portraits and surviving period garments this promises to be a fascinating glimpse into Jane’s wardrobe.
