The work of the Archives covers the history of the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. We are partcularly concerned with its administrative history but our collection illustrates other aspects too. We have material about ordinary people and celebrities, everyday life and special occasions.
We are constantly searching out new material, material we then look after (repairing if necessary) and make available to the public. We also organise exhibitions, publications and events which advertise our collections.
We have many visitors. Some are tracing their family histories - occasionally coming from the other side of the world to hunt for ancestors in West London. Others are interested in the history of their homes. They want to know when the house was built and who lived there. Some are writing local history books or are engaged in academic research. The Archives and Local History Centre is a reference service, and material cannot be lent.
Photographic service; reproduction fees are charged when appropriate. List of charges available on request.
Photocopying facilities, staff-operated. Some original or fragile material is not suitable for photocopying.
Publications on local history subjects, reproduction maps, postcards and greetings cards are on sale; list available on request.

The Archives and Local History Centre opened in 1992 and amalgamated the holdings of the Archives Department at Shepherds Bush Library, the Fulham Local Collection at Fulham Library and the Hammersmith Local Collection at Hammersmith Library.
There is a general card index for the archive collections which includes entries for personal names, place, subject and previous enquiries, as well as the 1851 census names index. There are street indexes for the 1841-1891 censuses, and a names index for the 1881 census on microfiche. There are separate author, title, subject, biographical, street names and classified indexes covering the Fulham and Hammersmith Local Collections. There is an index of the slide collection. Many of the record groups in the archive collections have been listed. Lists are available in the searchroom.
