La Traviata

La Traviata

  • 29 September 2016 7:30-9:45pm

Following the success of Carmen and The Marriage of Figaro, Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose are back with their new English version of Verdi's La Traviata. The story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations.

Set in the 1920s prohibition era of speakeasies and bootlegging, with Violetta’s lover Alfredo, a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by time at the front in the first world war, Violetta’s protector ‘the Baron’, a gang boss, and Alfredo’s father, a crooked politician, this new production reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties.

"As much emotional truth as in any production I have seen" ★★★★ Evening Standard
New orchestration for piano, clarinet and cello by Harry Blake. New English version by Robin Norton-Hale.

Dance Umbrella

Dance Umbrella Double Bill: No Man is an Island & Tetris

  • 9 October 2016 3-4:30pm

Arch 8 Choreographer Erik Kaiel’s work is unorthodox, acrobatic and perfect for children (and grown-ups) who can’t sit still.

Inspired by playground games and the casual way that kids fling themselves about, his dancers tumble and contort, exploring the limits of their bodies. To put it simply, it’s awesome.

Tetris is a piece of dance theatre for children based on the eponymous computer game of strategy and fun. Four dancers work as a perfect unit, uniquely dependent on one another, their legs and arms twisted together in complex knots.

No Man is an Island is a fascinating duet where one dancer’s body supports the other throughout, so his feet never come into contact with the ground.

Tickets can also be purchased solely for the performance of Tetris at 3.30pm (Tickets £10).

Thrive

Thrive

  • 13 October 2016 6-7pm, 8-9pm

Research suggests that roughly half of the British population will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. How do you think you would you cope if it happened to you?

Thrive is about three young people that didn't go looking for suffering, but suffering found them anyway. When Ollie, Ashleigh and Raph are thrown together by the sudden death of someone they knew, they find themselves wrestling with the turbulent emotions that painful events throw up. Join them on their journey and stand side by side with them as they recover, survive and maybe even Thrive.

This exciting production for young people is staged inside a visually stunning set that completely surrounds the audience. Using humour, movement and spoken word, Zest Theatre beautifully portrays the most challenging of emotions with courage and optimism. Thrive shows us what happens when three people, pushed to the edge of what they can bear, dig deep and learn to live on.

Developed in collaboration with Psychologists and inspired by true stories of young people, Thrive is a life-affirming look at finding hope in the face of adversity.

Operation Crucible

Operation Crucible

  • 20 October 2016 1:30-3pm, 7:30-9pm

Set against the backdrop of the Sheffield Blitz, Operation Crucible is the story of four ordinary men in extraordinary times.

On the 12 December 1940, more than six hundred people lost their lives in over seven hours of continuous bombing by Germany's Luftwaffe. Their objective? Wiping Sheffield’s world famous steel works - the heartland of Britain’s munitions manufacturing - clean off the map. The ruthless attack left Sheffield in ruins – destroying families, shattering a way of life, and changing the city forever.

At 11.44pm on the night of the raid, a single bomb reduced the Marples Hotel, which stood proudly in Fitzalan Square, from seven storeys to just fifteen feet of rubble. Only one of the ten compartments in the hotel’s cellars withstood the blast. Within it, trapped, were four men. This is their story, from beginning to end.
