Winkworth today is most famous for its autumn colour. Boldly arranged masses of mountain ashes, whitebeam and maples bring splashes of russet and gold to the valley landscape. But the Winter Garden, the magnolias, cherries, azaleas, bluebells and summer-flowering shrubs ensure a continuity of stunning colour and interest throughout the year. Winkworth boasts two lakes and a boat-house; a hillside woodland; an award-winning collection containing over 1,000 different shrubs and trees - many of which are rare; and wildlife in abundance.

Heritage Open Days: Winkworth Arboretum

  • 12 September 2015

An Arboretum with twisting paths leading to secret glades and hidden views. The dramatic hillside location provides the perfect canvas for a collection of plants and trees that paint a picture. Immerse yourself in texture, colour and fragrance. Bursts of colour excite the senses at every turn and changes take place every day of the season. Perfect for a family picnic in the summer or a stroll through the crisp leaves in autumn when the foliage is ablaze. In spring, the rich and stark winter landscape gives way to brilliant carpets of old English bluebells with impressive displays of azaleas and magnolias. You could say that the views are best seen from the boathouse where the colour is reflected in the giant lake and wildlife can be spotted.

Although much of the Arboretum is planted on steep slopes we have an 'access for all' path, which will enable visitors of all abilities to make the most of their visit.

And don't forget the tea-room offering delicious homemade scones, cakes and light lunches.
