Winkworth today is most famous for its autumn colour. Boldly arranged masses of mountain ashes, whitebeam and maples bring splashes of russet and gold to the valley landscape. But the Winter Garden, the magnolias, cherries, azaleas, bluebells and summer-flowering shrubs ensure a continuity of stunning colour and interest throughout the year. Winkworth boasts two lakes and a boat-house; a hillside woodland; an award-winning collection containing over 1,000 different shrubs and trees - many of which are rare; and wildlife in abundance.

Heritage Open Days 2014: Winkworth Arboretum

  • 13 September 2014

Far more than just a walk in the woods. A beautiful collection of trees and plants set in a dramatic hillside location offering peace and tranquillity, a masterpiece of planting surrounding a magnificent lake and wetland area. The National Trust's only arboretum, Winkworth is a wonderful collection of trees and plants uniquely set in over 100 acres of dramatic Surrey countryside offering stunning views whatever the season. Created by Dr Wilfrid Fox in the early part of the 20th century the dramatic hillside location provides the perfect “canvas” for what he described as using plants “to paint a picture”. The extraordinary planting combinations will immerse you in texture, colour and fragrance that will inspire you. We look forward to welcoming you to Winkworth Arboretum.

Please refer to the Heritage Open Days website for booking details and timings.
