A striking landmark on the White Cliffs of Dover, this historic building was the site of Faraday’s work in pioneering the use of electricity in lighthouses, and was the first to display an electrically powered signal. South Foreland was also used by Marconi for his successful wireless telegraphy experiments in 1898.

Admission charges

Lighthouse: £2.40, child £1.20, family £6. Groups £2, child £1. Large groups can be accommodated, but will be split into smaller tour groups of about 10, so there may be some waiting. No shelter available for more than 30 people.

Guided tours for all visitors. Out-of-hours tours for booked groups only; guided walks to the lighthouse from the White Cliffs visitor centre, Apr–Oct.

Fan Bay Foray

Join our local expert for an informative walk through the new National Trust land saved by the appeal last year. Discover why Fan Bay was such an important fortification and re-live the stories of the defences now lost. Enjoy an informal walk where our expert will bring history to life, using rarely seen photographs and documents. Please wear comfortable clothing and sensible footwear. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Lighthouse is a 2 mile walk (45 minutes) from the White Cliffs Site.

Teddy Bear Pirate Party

Ahoy there budding pirates! You and your teddy bear are invited to a Pirate Party in the grounds of South Foreland Lighthouse. Come dressed as pirates and make a Jolly Roger Flag, decorate a pirate cupcake and after walk the plank during our pirate themed fun day.

Turner and the Two Towers, Guided Walk

Unlock the secrets of J.M. Turners Beacon Light, a painting thought for many years to be a fake. Last year it was proven with infra red scans and new historical analysis that Beacon Light was actually an undiscovered Turner, of St. Margarets Bay and South Foreland Lighthouse. Discover why Turner only painted one lighthouse and walk to the spot where he painted his masterpiece.
