English Heritage is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, English Heritage is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Our powers and responsibilities are set out in the National Heritage Act (1983) and today we report to Parliament through the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

The work of English Heritage is overseen by a Chairman and a board of up to 16 Commissioners selected by the Government for the breadth of their national and regional expertise. The Commission is, in turn, advised by 13 expert advisory committees and panels.

English Heritage is proud of its commitment to heritage education. We aim to help teachers and those involved in education – at all levels – to use the historic environment as a resource, right across the curriculum. You can view over 300,000 images of England's built heritage from lamp posts to lavatories, phone boxes to toll booths, mile stones to gravestones, as well as thousands of bridges, historic houses and churches.

Heritage Open Days Classroom

HODs classroom is a new online multi-media resource, designed to inspire teachers to use the built environment across the curriculum, inside adn outside the classroom. Produced by the Civic Trust as part of its HLF-supported Heritage Open Days education programme, it promotes teh concept of civic pride adn community awareness as an inetgral part of citizenship education. Using many places open for Heritage Open Days as examples, HODs Classroom activities and media enable pupils to engage with, to understand and to value their local environment.

The images can be dramatically displayed for whole class teaching on a whiteboard or copied onto acetates and projected on an OHP. You can print out individual images or captions or copy them into a worksheet of your own design.
Pupils could do further research and show their findings in a presentation illustrated with these images.

Our Faith Buildings Film

We celebrate architectural, cultural and religious heritage for its diversity, but it is the similarities between places and people which give us an important shared heritage. Our Faith Buildings is a film featuring local children, exploring Wolverhampton’s religious heritage and offering an introduction to how Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews and different Christian denominations use nine local faith buildings.
The film is being made available as an educational resource to be used within the National Curriculum’s Citizenship and Religious Studies programmes.
