Delightful sheltered garden, renowned for its herbs and orchards growing old English fruit varieties. Ancient oaks and high enclosing walls keep the extremes of the Cumbrian climate out of the garden, resulting in a spectacular display of shrubs, roses and herbaceous borders. Orchards contain a variety of traditional fruit trees and the famous herb garden is the largest collection of medicinal and culinary plants in the north of England. A circular woodland walk runs along Crowdundle Beck to the partially restored Acorn Bank watermill, which is open to visitors. The house is not open to the public, though parts of it are available as holiday cottages.

Heritage Open Days 2014: Acorn Bank

  • 13 September 2014

See the house now at the beginning of our journey to bring it back to life. There has been a building on the site since 1228. The present, largely 17th century, house is unfurnished and has been empty since it ceased to be a nursing home in the late 1990s, but still retains historical features and has fascinating stories to tell. The tranquil walled gardens are best known for their herb garden and orchards with a collection of local apple varieties
beyond the walls woodland paths lead to the restored watermill, now producing flour again after a gap of 70 years.
