Welcome to the Costume Society. Formed 40 years ago it pioneered the exploration of all aspects of clothing and personal appearance within a like-minded membership which now includes collectors, curators, designers, lecturers, students and informed enthusiasts. The Society aims to provide the finest opportunities to study and become involved with this fascinating topic through its events, an annual symposium, its Journal and Newsletters. If costume is the mirror of history, the Society provides its many reflections as it investigates this dynamic history up to and including contemporary fashion. When you join this lively and friendly Society you will be warmly welcomed and encouraged to offer your ideas for its future development. What Does The Society Do? The Society aims to encourage access to costume history, include contemporary dress in various different ways; "Costume", the Society's journal, is published every year and presents the latest research on all aspects of dress from all over the world, from pre-history to the present day. It also reviews recent books and exhibitions. The Symposium is a theme-based weekend conference with key speakers and affords an opportunity for members to present their research in the subject area. It also acts as the Society's social focus. The Biannual Newsletter keeps members in touch with what's going on in the Society and where the latest exhibitions, courses and study days are being held. We produce an annual programme of meetings which cover a range of subjects and periods including the annual Designer Dialogue when members have the opportunity to meet with some of the most influential people in the fashion industry. The Society has organised visits to collections, exhibitions and archives including overseas visits to some of the great European, North American and Indian Museums.
