Manchester District Music Archive will open a museum and exhibition space dedicated to the history of music in Greater Manchester. We will celebrate forgotten chapters of the past whilst embracing the region’s exciting future. From the Halle to The Hollies, from Wigan Casino to the Hacienda – no story will be left untold. Manchester District Music Archive will archive and protect thousands of fascinating objects and artefacts relating to local music. We will collect and exhibit films, videos, photographs, artwork, posters, flyers, clothing and literature. Manchester District Music Archive will host talks and seminars about all aspects of music. We will explore the music hall tradition, the jazz boom, the beat scene, the protest song, rave culture and beyond. We will highlight the influence of immigration on the region’s musical evolution. Manchester District Music Archive will preserve and make available for the public every piece of music made in the Manchester area from the 1800s to the present day. We will hold exhibitions, events and concerts as well as giving tours of the region’s important cultural sites. Manchester District Music Archive will put members of the public in touch with the region’s music-related organisations. We will signpost record shops, instrument shops, artwork designers, choirs, rehearsal rooms, venues, support agencies and all other useful establishments. Manchester District Music Archive will forge strong links with other related galleries, museums, businesses and agencies to bring about a more cohesive cultural network for the area.
