Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum based on the Grand Union Canal. Housed in a restored cornmill in the picturesque village of Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal, the museum collection vividly portrays the heritage of 200 years of inland waterways. This fascinating and colourful insight into a transport system, fundamental to the industrial revolution in Britain is complemented by the "living canal" outside with its flight of locks, boats and Blisworth Tunnel.
Explore the mysteries of this intriguing part of our heritage through working models, videos, pictorial and three dimensional displays portraying every aspect of the waterways. From amazing feats of engineering to the shining brass and colourful decoration that contrasts so sharply with the harsh reality of canal life, you will find something to interest all the family.
The Museum runs regular courses in such subjects as narrowboat decoration, and fendermaking and ropework. Course dates and details are available upon request. You can cruise along the Grand Union Canal in splendid tranquillity on one of the trip boats operating at Stoke Bruerne.
Stoke Bruerne offers two pleasant canalside walks. The short route to the Blisworth Tunnel is tarmac and suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, or follow the towpath down the flight of seven locks. There are also 3 restaurants, a tea room and 2 pubs in the village. The village is a beautiful example of a traditional canal village, built mainly from the honey coloured local stone. One of the pair of locks is no longer operational but now contains a boat weighing machine complete with narrowboat.
The entire collection of this museum is a Designated Collection of national importance.

The museum charts the fascinating story of the inland waterways of the British Isles, from the eighteenth century to the present day. The collection includes objects painted by boatmen in the traditional 'Roses and Castles' style, costumes worn by boating families, waterways souvenirs from the 1950s, a large collection of photographs and extensive archive material such as canal company share certificates. Splendidly located within a nineteenth century warehouse, in what was once a busy working dock, the museum houses many examples of sacks, pulleys and dockside tools. Located on the surrounding quayside are floating exhibits that include a Victorian narrow boat, a steam dredger and a concrete barge.
