The Scottish Screen Archive was established in 1976 and is a department of Scottish Screen, a publicly funded organisation.
The main purpose of the Archive is to locate, preserve and provide access to Scotland's moving image heritage. In addition, the Archive collects a wide range of written and photographic materials relating to the development of cinema exhibition and film production in Scotland over the past 100 years.
The Scottish Screen Archive is a founder member of the UK Film Archive Forum and a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).

Principally non-fiction, the collection comprises some 32,000 reels and videotapes. The nature of the holdings includes topical, documentary, educational, promotional, industrial and amateur material as well as Gaelic language productions. The online access catalogue represents the titles in the Archive which have been preserved and copied onto a viewing format.
