Storytelling that rhymes (sometimes!)

Dean Fraser will take you on a journey. Expect to hear tales told of our ancestors and life in the 21st century. Master storyteller Dean is proud to say that his stories do rhyme (sometimes!). His performance comes complete with his irreverent sense of humour and natural warmth.

The one who blows the bloody doors off!

  • 9 October 2014 2-3pm

Evan worked in film and TV special effects for over 30 years, blowing up buildings, shooting people, making it rain and engaging in total warfare. He has worked with numerous stars, including James Mason, Richard Harris, Norman Wisdom, David Jason and Robson Green. He reveals some of the tricks of his trade in this entertaining talk as well as the unforeseen consequences when things don't go according to plan!

How to Survive a Wild Winter

The dragon kingdom

Bhutan is a tiny kingdom nestling high in the Himalayas. It was largely cut off from the rest of the world for many years and many of the trappings of modern civilisation are only just arriving there. Ken Winterburn took a trip to this remote country and reveals what he discovered about a community that has been described as 'the happiest place on earth'.

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 they said it would be 'all over by Christmas'. Sadly the hostilities ran for another 4 years and Steve Williams describes life in the trenches on the Western Front and Gallipoli at Christmas time, including the famous football match during the Christmas truce on 1914.

Medicine and magic - a talk by Peter Watson

  • 10 December 2014 2-3pm

Peter Watson reveals some of the techniques in traditional and historic medical practice, including the treatment of illness by weird and wonderful methods such as holding children over hot tar barrels to cure whooping cough and rubbing raw meat into warts.
