mima brings together Middlesbrough’s art collections for the first time.

The mima collection comprises outstanding fine and applied art from 1900 to the present day, with many pieces acquired by mima’s forerunners, Middlesbrough Art Gallery and the Cleveland Craft Centre.

Rather than being on permanent display, works from the collection are drawn upon throughout the exhibition programme. This gives mima's curators the opportunity to demonstrate the artistic quality of works acquired as well as constantly re-inventing the way in which works are presented.

Art and Optimism in 1950s Britain

  • 21 February — 29 June 2014 *on now

Post-war Britain was a time of contradictions: alongside austerity, rationing and the lasting trauma of war were optimism and a sense of progress and change. Many artists of this time recorded a sense of apprehension and anger in their work, while the Festival of Britain and designers of homewares and advertising were embracing the new. The exhibition explores all of this through paintings, posters, sculpture, furniture and ceramics, with works from major collections across the UK – including Tate, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Arts Council Collection – shown alongside works from mima’s collection.

ARTISTS ROOMS Louise Bourgeois: A Woman Without Secrets

  • 18 July — 12 October 2014

Bourgeois’ art, in a variety of materials and scales, examines the mystery and beauty of human emotions.

She explores issues around vulnerability and fear, often drawing on her own life experiences, and looks at ideas of womanhood and its various guises through a vocabulary of recurring motifs – spiders, spirals and entwined fabric bodies.
ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is a partnership with Arts Council England and the Art Fund, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments.
