Built in 1699, Castle Howard is one of the country's finest historic houses and is still the private residence of the Howard family.

FREE admission to the Stable Courtyard and Garden Centre.

Indoors, art treasures include paintings by Canaletto, Holbein, Gainsborough and Reynolds, a collection of antique sculpture, and the porcelain collections include a spectacular Crown Derby botanical dessert service. Outdoors there are temples, lead statues and an array of monuments.

Heroines & Harridans

Castle Howard may have been built and furnished by husbands, fathers and sons but the women of the house played an equally significant role in shaping the future of the grand stately home.

Discover the stories of these remarkable women, including Roasalind the 9th Countess who, whilst her husband pursued his passion for art, managed all the family estates. She also raised her 5 daughters and 6 sons and led an active political life, campaigning for votes for women, no wonder she was known as ‘The Radical Countess’.

Tea and coffee will be served on arrival, with wine & canapés at the end of the evening.

Evening starts at 6pm with tea and coffee in the Grecian Hall. Talk begins 6:30pm evening ends (approx) 8:45pm.

On arrival drive down to the front of the House to park. Enter via the House Entrance.

Robin Hood Outdoor Theatre

This joyful and fun-filled musical has been written by Cambridge Touring Theatre to get you singing, dancing and joining in with Robin Hood's adventures. Children are invited to come dressed in their best ‘Merry Men and Women’ fashion.

There will be a 45 minute drama workshop before for children aged 5-10 for an additional charge. Here children can be introduced to the characters from the story and work on themed drama activities, songs and games.

Run or Dye

At Run or Dye, you become part of the rainbow. As you run/walk/dance through the course, you will get showered in safe, eco-friendly, plant-based powdered dye at every kilometre...turning you into a technicolor canvas of fun!

You're welcome to walk, run, dance, or skip your way to the finish line. And Run or Dye is family-friendly -- kids 6 and under run FREE!

At Run or Dye, you are the canvas, so wear whatever you want! Lots of runners prefer wearing white to show off all the color...but many come dressed in crazy costumes.

The Pre-Raphaelites at Castle Howard

An illustrated talk revealing the close and intimate relationship between the Howard family and a circle of brilliant artists and designers who were part of the Pre-Raphaelite movement many of whom were commissioned to decorate all three Howard homes.

Take a tour of the chapel, with its magnificent interior including, William Morris & Edward Burne-Jones stained glass windows before accessing private family archive material, such as the Dante Rossetti portrait of Rosalind Howard and original Morris wallpaper which had lined the Long Gallery.

Tea and coffee will be served on arrival, with wine & canapés at the end of the evening.

The Proms

Premium Monumental Tour

This all day events begins with a walking tour with our curatorial team, which takes in the Avenue, Gatehouse, Mock Fortifications, Pyramid, Mausoleum and Temple of the Four Winds including exclusive access to some of the buildings.

After the morning's walk, relax and warm up over a delicious two-course lunch by the roaring fire in the Grecian Hall.

In the afternoon access some of our private archive collection, including old estate maps, retracing the routes you've explored in the morning.

Price: £65 | Discount applies for Annual Pass holders
The tour involves walking across uneven terrain so sensible footwear is require, the walk lasts approximately 3 hours.

Meet your tour guide at 10am. On arrival, park in the Visitor car park and go to the Ticket Office to register.

Day finishes at approximately 3pm.
