A handful of oats (Cloned)
Join us in celebration of how the oat proved to be a staple ingredient in the Georgian Cumbrian diet. Head for the kitchen to try your hand at ‘the daily grind’ of the oats which would in turn be used in the production of clap bread, the forerunner of the modern oat cake. Learn about travelling clap bread makers and experience how clap bread was made over an open fire. Try rum butter, which was used to mask the cardboard like qualities of the clap bread and learn more about the rum trade. Children very welcome. Disabled/wheelchair access available.
