Charnwood Museum

Charnwood Museum features a wide range of exhibits reflecting the history, geology, archaeology and industries of Charnwood and the surrounding area. Permanent displays include ‘Coming to Charnwood’, ‘The Natural World of Charnwood’, ‘Living off the Land’ and ‘Earning a Living’. Each contains exhibits from the past and present including interactive displays, computers and audio-visuals. Visitors can handle rocks from Charnwood’s volcanic past, walk beneath the giant oak tree, investigate the 4,000 year old burial of the Cossington Boy, visit the Victorian grocers shop or zoom-in on a fly’s eye with the video microscope.

Garendon archaeology display

See the wonderful finds found by Loughborough Coin and Search Society from the Garendon Estate, Loughborough, including a rare Iron Age axe and the fabulous Henry II coin hoard.

Viking warfare in the light of recent discoveries and book signing, at the Jewry Wall Museum

Hear a fascinating talk by one of the leading experts on the Vikings. Gareth Williams, curator at the British Museum, has published extensively on both Viking and Anglo-Saxon topics and was responsible for the curating the recent exhibition Vikings: Life and Legend.




Get potty at Charnwood Museum

Make and decorate fabulous clay pots inspired by the museum's archaeology collections, (suitable for children aged 3 and above).

Charnwood day of archaeology

  • 25 July 2015 10am-4pm

A day looking at the archaeology of the Loughborough area, run in conjunction with the Loughborough Coin And Search Society, with newly discovered objects to view and hands on activities including the chance to try your hand with a metal detector.
