Birdoswald Roman Fort stands high above a meander in the River Irthing, in one of the most picturesque settings on Hadrian's Wall. A Roman fort, turret and milecastle can all be seen on this excellent stretch of the Wall.

The Imperial Roman Army

26 — 27 May 2013

Join the armoured ranks of the Ermine Street Guard as the imperial Roman army is put through its training. Youngsters can join in the drill and training with sessions throughout the day, or meet the Roman potter with hands on fun for all junior potters.

Roman Pottery School

28 May — 2 June 2013

Local master potter Graham Taylor recreates the life of the travelling craftsman from Roman Britain, complete with his handcart, where the cart wheel turns into the potters wheel. There are opportunities for hands on fun for all junior potters too.

Children's Roman Soldier School

20 July — 26 August 2013

Join our Centurion for some hands on fun – with Roman themed craft activities throughout the day from colouring and paper helmet making to games to Roman drill and Roman artefact handling. Plus, try on costumes, Roman armour and a Centurion’s helmet.

Crafty Romans Discovery Visit

Make your own piece of Rome to take home and/or come face to face with a Roman soldier in full uniform!Explore Roman life through a guided tour of the site, handle objects and meet a soldier to learn and ask questions about life in the Roman Army. Three different activity sessions are also available. Making replicas of Roman helmets involves discussion about uniform, armour and weapons; jewellery-making explores dress and wealth; and mosaic-making focuses on homes and style.
