The Engine House project is based at Sandford Mill, Chelmsford's old waterworks, where the Museum's industrial collections are stored. In our science sessions we use the museum collections and our own purpose built interactive exhibits to give children exciting hands-on experiences. Our sessions are linked to the National Curriculum. We use large hands-on exhibits to help children find out how things work. We use museum collections to link science to everyday situations.

Heritage Open Days 2014: Sandford Mill Open Day

  • 11 — 12 September 2014

Sandford Mill is the former Borough Waterworks for Chelmsford with a red brick 1920s Engine Pumping building and a 1950s Chemical Filter Building (no access to this). There is very little to see of the original Mill itself apart from the exterior of two brick cottages. Since the waterworks closed, there are lovely natural habitats being re-colonised, and the old millpond and weir (still controlled by the Environment Agency) is impressive. The buildings on site are now used by Chelmsford Museums as an open store for its reserve industrial and agricultural collections, including the Marconi Hut 2MT from Writtle, and the Bill Waters marine radio equipment collection. Admision is free (donations always welcome).

Please refer to the Heritage Open Days website for booking details and timings.
