Doddington Hall is a superb Elizabethan mansion completed in 1600 by the brilliant architect, Robert Smythson.

The Hall stands today exactly as it was built with its walled gardens, gatehouse, and family church. The elegant Georgian interior contains a fascinating collection of pictures, textiles, porcelain and furniture that reflect four centuries of unbroken family occupation.

All parties are encouraged to take an interactive tour of the Hall led by a costumed guide who will explore the house in character. The tour can provide emphasis on Tudors (Key Stage 2), Victorians (Key Stage 1 or 2), Homes long ago (Key Stage 1), or Time Travelling (Key Stage 1 or 2).

We offer various workshops around the house and garden, taking between 50 minutes and 1 hour, tailored to the age and abilities of primary school children. Clips from our audio tour of the Hall can also be downloaded from our website.

How to obtain

There are many more opportunities for cross-curricular learning such as story telling, creative writing, looking at portraits and drama.
We encourage all schools new to the programme to make a recce visit to Doddington to discuss their requirements, plan their visit and complete all H&S documentation. Sensory Tours for the Visually Impaired

The garden sensory tour includes feeling gates, statues and topiary; smelling and tasting herbs; listening in the walled garden and the wild garden; walking on different surfaces and exploring the turf maze on foot or with a tactile diagram.
The house sensory tour includes tactile diagrams; objects to feel such as carved furniture, leather books, picture frames and textiles; the smells of polished furniture, smoky fireplaces and the tented room; the echoing Long Gallery and muffled sounds in the tapestry covered Holly Bedroom. An audio tour is also available.

How to obtain

The sensory tours are designed to be used with the help of a companion or one of our trained staff. We can provide a volunteer to accompany you around the Hall and or gardens but you need to book in advance by calling the office on 01522 694308. The tours are printed in folders in large type, which are available to borrow free from the Gatehouse shop.
