High on a cliff above the seaside town of Whitby are the gaunt, imposing remains of Whitby Abbey. Founded in 657 by St Hilda, Whitby Abbey has over the years been a bustling settlement, a kings' burial place, a home of saints and inspiration for Bram Stoker, author of Dracula. Discover how 2,000 years of history make the Abbey one of England's most important archaeological sites, in the interactive visitor centre.

The Path to Paradise

The Tudor abbey Discovery Visit

Meet Master Will who will guide you around the key areas of the abbey and give you relics to handle. What was life like in Tudor times? What was the abbey's role in the local community? How did Henry VIII's divorce and the Dissolution of the Monasteries affect it? Discover the answers and find out much more about life before the Reformation. Activities take place entirely out of doors unless the weather is exceptionally bad.

Time traveller's trail Discovery Visit

Journey back in time to uncover the dramatic story of Whitby Abbey, from its foundation by Anglo-Saxon royalty to the present day. Use your detective skills to find clues that tell you how the abbey was built. Examine real and replica objects to learn about the lives of the people who lived here. Put yourself in the sandals of a novice monk descending the night stairs for prayer and find out who was who in medieval society. Discover why the abbey looks as it does today and also why Whitby was one of the most important monastic sites in England for hundreds of years. Activities take place entirely out of doors unless the weather is excpetionally bad.
