Based on the junction of Calverley Street and the Headrow in the centre of Leeds, the Central Library includes a comprehensive and specialist Information Centre, Art and Music Libraries, Local and Family History Collections among others.

The library has rooms for quiet study, computer and Internet access and has a varied programme of art exhibitions and events.

The Central Library also provides a varied and wide-ranging programme of adult learning sessions and regular activities and events for community groups, children, families and the general public.

The Arts Space on the 1stfloor has a regular programme of exhibitions and visual art displays.

Aspects and Images of Leeds during the Great War

  • 28 July — 28 September 2014 *on now

Exhibition featuring material from the collections of Leeds Library and Information Service including images of Barnbow, National Ordnance factories and general views of the city. Central to the exhibition will be the 'Digital Scrapbook', an Arts Council funded project focusing on a scrapbook compiled during the war by the Matron of Gledhow Hall.

Heritage Open Days 2014: Leeds Central Library

  • 11 — 14 September 2014

A Grade II* listed Victorian building that was constructed between 1878 and 1884. Contains fine examples of carved stone, stained glass and Victorian tiles, and was dubbed 'the Municipal Palace' when it opened as council offices. Enjoy a tour of this wonderful building with access to some of the behind the scenes areas. Tours last approximately 60 minutes.
