The Museum tells the story of generations of
soldiers, from the raising of the Regiment in
1756 through to Regimental life today.

The Museum's Ladysmith Gallery (re-developed in
2002) tells our story chronologically, covering
major actions such as the American War of
Independence, New-Zealand, the Crimea, South
Africa, both World Wars and the Malayan
Emergency. The Gallery also houses over 2000
medals including 6 Victoria Cross Groups as well
as a reconstruction of a First World War
trench.

The Forshaw Gallery (Re-developed in
2006) covers themed aspects of our story
including recreation, daily routine, the soldier
as collector, regimental insignia, regimental
dress, Mess Life and some of our Regimental
Treasures. The Gallery also includes a
reconstruction of a 1950' Barrack Room from Ladysmith
Barracks and original Army Jeep as well as many
family-friendly interactives that bring our
story to life for the whole family.

The Special Exhibition space changes every 6
months. This space highlights a lesser-known
aspect of our story and gives repeat
visitors something new to see each time they
visit.

The Regimental Archives are deposited
with Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre,
Just 10 minutes walk from the Museum. Here they
are publically accessible, without charge, 6
days a week. For more information please
contact the Archive Centre directly on 0161 342

The Home Guard

2 January — 11 July 2013 *on now

During the Second World War, 1.5 million men aged 17 to 65 served in the Home Guard’s ranks. They were ineligible for military service, largely for being too young or too old, and they guarded coastal areas and other important sites such as airfields, factories and explosives stores.

It is the Home Guard units cap-badged to the Manchester Regiment who provide the theme for the next free exhibition at the award-winning Museum of the Manchester Regiment, at Ashton-under-Lyne Town Hall.

The museum tells their story through photographs – many on public display for the first time – and the objects they left behind. It is interested in hearing from anyone who served with the Manchester Regiment and especially if they have memories of their service days in the Home Guard or recollections of a close family member’s involvement.

National Service Veteran talking to a group of students

Brasso, Blanco and Bull: National Service (Army) 1950's Style

This facilitated session (1-2 hours long) led by our costumed living history expert “Corporal Cook” brings this period of history back to life. This hands-on session gives participants a flavour of army national service during the 1950’s, from being “Called-Up”, through “The Medical” and “Basic Training”. Participants get a chance to handle period objects and try on period uniform and equipment. This dynamic session also enables participants to meet with a local Manchester Regiment National Service Veteran. This opportunity for intergenerational discussion is stimulated by an activity making a “Basha” or tent by participants, led by the veteran – developing communication skills and team working abilities among participants in the process. This session can be offered either during a pre-booked visit to the Museum or in school.
