Originally the building, built in 1929, pumped water from the River Thames to the Surrey Commercial Docks to maintain the water level at low tide. The Pumphouse was refurbished in 1989 and is used today as an Heritage Museum and environmental study centre. It is set adjacent to a two hectare nature park and pond, a peaceful haven in bustling London.
The centre provides the following services:
Education Service - to all mainstream and special needs schools at Key Stage 1-3 in Science, History and Geography. Inset and advisory service available. Fully resourced education department.
Eco-Watch Club Service - A weekend club for children to explore citizenship, conservation and ecology.
Communication and Interaction Service - to residential homes for older people suffering from dementia related illness.

Rotherhithe Heritage Museum:
Houses a collection of artefacts from the foreshore of the River Thames dating from Roman times to present day.A unique collection of Dockers' tools provide insight into the past. Six foot iced replica of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding cake and Peek Freans memorabilia displayed.
The main hall displays the following exhibitions:
The 1950's - a comprehensive collection of memorabilia.
The Blitz Room - a room from the 1940's.
Artefacts from the Twentieth Century - a hands-on collection of artefacts used in the homes in the last century.
