Leeds Museums and Galleries are delivered and funded by Leeds City Council. The service is part of the cultural section of the council which presents a wide range of fun and exciting leisure pursuits including parks, sport, festivals, concerts and events to the people of Leeds and beyond.

Nine museum sites make up the Museums and Galleries service: Abbey House Museum, Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, Lotherton Hall, Temple Newsam House, Thwaite Mills Watermill, Leeds Museum Discovery Centre, and Leeds City Museum.

Together, Leeds Museums and Galleries collectively present the opportunity to discover the history of the city from its earliest days to the Leeds we live in today, as well as investigate the world through fascinating collections covering the natural world, industrial history, world cultures, archaeology, costume and the fine and decorative arts.

All our museum collections are housed in sites as varied as majestic medieval abbey ruins, grand country houses, brooding industrial mills and galleries of intriguing art.

The natural science, fine and decorative arts, and industrial collections of Leeds Museums & Galleries are Designated Collections of national importance.

They are located at Leeds City Art Gallery, Leeds City Museum, Lotherton Hall, Temple Newsam House, Armley Mills Industrial Museum, and Thwaite Mills Museum. Please contact Leeds Museums & Galleries for more information if you wish to see a specific item.

The City Art Gallery's 20th century British art collection, especially the sculpture, is particularly fine. 18th and 19th century English watercolours are also well represented.

The decorative art and old master painting collections installed in restored period settings at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall are rich in outstanding furniture, notably Chippendale, silver, textiles, wallpapers, and ceramics, with an excellent collection of Leeds creamware.

The Industrial collections reflect the crucial role played by the city in economic and social affairs over the last 200 years at national and global levels. Particular strengths lie in the fields of textiles and engineering.

The world-wide natural science collections contain over 700 000 specimens collected over a 200-year period. These include a wide selection of specimens of great historical importance, particularly invertebrate and mineral items and exotic mammals.
