Tameside Oprn Art Exhibtion
- 8 July — 8 October 2016 *on now
THE Tameside Open Art Exhibition is back again and, as usual it’s using the broadest of brushes.
Unlike other events of its kind it has no selection procedure, so it provides the ideal opportunity for artists of all abilities to get their work displayed in an art gallery.
The exhibition offers the public a great chance to see the quality of work being produced in the borough by the widest range of professional and amateur artists. Paintings range from traditional watercolours to more abstract oils and cover a variety of subjects. There are also photographs and mixed media work.
Most of the work within the exhibition is for sale at reasonable prices.

Towards the Edge: Paintings of the Peak District by Simon Parkin
- 15 October 2016 — 4 February 2017
THE latest exhibition at Tameside Central Art Gallery sees the return of popular Glossop-based artist Simon Parkin.
Following on from his vibrant and colourful “India” series two years ago, his latest work takes inspiration from the landscapes of the Peak District.
He explained: “My painting derives from the need to connect to the environment. I strive to capture the feeling, atmosphere and essence of character of the location. When painting outside I become part of the landscape.
“There is a continual dialogue with the paintings as I feel my way through the layers of paint, capturing what I see, think and feel. I use the painting process to explore the landscape, the ever-changing colours and textures, the dramatic sense of light and space, as well as the wildlife that inhabits and helps form the landscape.”
Simon uses objects within his paintings such as bracken, heather, small pieces of gritstone and dried grasses which he collects from the areas he is depicting. These help to create a greater sense of place and bring another dimension to the work.
Visitors are invited to mentally step inside the paintings and to lose themselves in their own thoughts and feelings.
